OpenAI is making progress training a 5 bot team to beat eSports gamers this Summer

195A8963_croppedOpenAI has an informative new blog post out talking about using Azure (2017) and GCP (2018) to train bots to beat eSports pro gamers at The International in August. Confirms last year their use of 60k CPU cores and 256 K80 GPUs in Azure for 1v1. In 5v5 used 128k CPU cores in Google Compute Platform and 256 P100GPUs, 3x performance as 1v1.

Relative to previous AI milestones like Chess or Go, complex video games start to capture the messiness and continuous nature of the real world. The hope is that systems which solve complex video games will be highly general, with applications outside of games.
